Waiting on the Holy Spirit with Passion
Episode #784
12/12/2021

With Martha Kilpatrick and hosted by John Enslow
With special guest: Ladonna Spears.

This the continuation of a series of podcasts started in Episode #783
Some wait on the Holy Spirit almost with an expectation that He won’t come rather than He’s coming.

Martha:
You remember our friend Sandy from Brazil? Somebody sent Sandy an Adoration and she was with a group of women. This friend who was going to take the book was invited to their meeting of the women of Sandy’s group because they were reading Adoration; they were real enthused.

So, my friend thought she was being called to speak and so she prepared a message. She went all the way to Brazil and she had a message that she was going to deliver to the women that had invited her. So, she goes to their meeting and all they do they begin by sitting silently together for a long time waiting for the Holy Spirit to come. And pretty soon they were all weeping.

John:
I don’t think that you, when you’re doing that you’re not just sitting waiting passively. That’s the problem. You’re like, “Ok, whenever You’re ready.” I don’t think that’s it. I think what you do is you’re giving Him your presence but you’re also giving Him your expectation and your anticipation and your focus. You’ve engaged your passion towards it. You’ve engaged your, it is your focus but it’s your passion. You’re seeking with hunger not with passivity.

I think a lot of us, I know I have, I’ve waited because I’ve almost had an expectation that He wasn’t coming rather than coming. Does that make sense? So, I sit and I wait and I expect that He’s not coming so I kind of brace myself for another disappointment. That’s not it at all. It’s sit with anticipation waiting for His will, His movement. But you’re putting passion behind it. That sitting, that focus is for Him.

I’m still learning. We’ve done this. But I’m still learning. And this whole thing with Myles has completely just stirred it up with His desire; it’s His desire. I met Myles and the whole scenario of meeting Myles and connecting with Myles has been kind of led and meandered through with the Spirit because He had something in mind; the Spirit had something in mind to bring to us through this Canadian in Saskatoon. What’s the likelihood of this North GA Mountain boy and this guy in Saskatoon, Canada meeting, connecting and then having that happen? It’s pretty fascinating to me.

Martha:
Can I tell my story?

John:
Absolutely.

Martha:
John’s involved in this and I don’t remember why but he wanted Myles and me to meet. This is a Spirit thing. So, he puts his face up…

John:
Doing FaceTime.

Martha:
…doing FaceTime. We were both seeing each other and he wanted to see Mimi. So, I look at him and I went, “You’re gorgeous.” And I was embarrassed. The Lord used to really embarrass me. I’m kind of use to Him now. But that was just spontaneous. And I backed up and thought, “What’s that?”

John:
It was precious.

Martha:
So, anyway I went to the Lord and He said, “It was Me telling him who he is to Me.” Shouting it! I said “Oh, you’re gorgeous!” It was the beauty of the Spirit on him.

John:
It is.

Martha:
So, it became a beautiful gift.

John:
Absolutely.

Martha:
I had to be a fool. And it was strange.

John:
And it was perfect. During the trip we called and he talked to you and it was a lot of fun; it was a whole lot of fun just to have y’all connect.

Martha:
And when I really got it from the Lord what it was it was the enthusiasm of the Spirit over his life.

John:
Right!

Martha:
Boy would that be welcome.

John:
Yeah.

Martha:
It ended up being wonderful. He’s just wild according to human…

John:
He does what He’s going to do. I’m excited to find Him and to find out what He’s doing because the path that He’s kind of led me to to discover all this has been very odd and very different but it’s bearing fruit. I feel like He’s in it. I may not feel like He’s doing it in the moment but I realize He is doing it by the fruit.

Martha:
He’s at work.

John:
He’s at work. And so, we may get together as a group and we may wait and we may not even know until the next week or sometimes during the night…that He even did anything. He doesn’t need to check our little boxes and say, “I’ve been here.”

Martha:
I have to throw my boxes away?

John:
Yeah, you do and so do I because He’s not interested in this checklist that we have. He’s just going to do what He’s going to do. But if I’m present, I’m going to get whatever He’s going to give.

Martha:
So, it’s being present every moment to Him.

John:
Totally. Present and with your focus and with a passion behind it. You have to have the anticipation and the passion behind it knowing that He wants to be there as bad as I want Him to be there.

Martha:
One of the scriptures I’m keeping, I don’t have it in front of me so I won’t promise it will be accurate…The Passion Translation of endurance…The Passion Translations says, “I see your passionate for the endurance.” It means He was passionate for our keeping that scripture.

John:
And I think that’s it right there.

Martha:
Endurance.

John:
I think that He is passionate and wants to bring that passion to us about us and wants to meet that passion with our passion. I’m excited.

Martha:
Imagine a church passionate free to be.

John:
During this whole time we went to a church service and in that church service that’s specifically what they were talking about. They said as a body we want to be completely wide open to the Holy Spirit to move. And so, they kind of laid it out because it’s a traditional church, not a home church. I understand what they’re doing. But they were basically inviting the Spirit. In this message they were saying we want the Holy Spirit and we want Him to move and we want to see Him. We want to witness Him. We want to see the gifts coming out of the people. We want to see His movement. We are hungry for His movement. They were saying if there is prophecy, bring it up. So, they had to do a little bit of traffic cones about it and set it up. That’s fine. I don’t care. If He’s moving, He’s moving. And if everybody is waiting and everybody is seeking Him passionately, looking for Him with anticipation then He is going to move. And I think that that’s what we need right now.

Martha:
It’s why we have to say, “Come!”

John:
Exactly.

Martha:
He only comes where He’s…

John:
Welcome.

Martha:
…welcome

John:
We’ve said this before on Podcast but we went to a particular church in NY and the revelation that I got there about the Spirit was pretty shocking. The Spirit fell on me and it was intense. I as crying. I wanted to get as far to ground. I came out of the crow’s nest and I fell down on the ground. I want to get underneath the ground. And then He left. And I said, “Why did You leave?” And He said, “Because the leadership, I’ve given my authority to the leadership and they are able to invite Me or send me away.”

Martha:
Quenching the Spirit.

John:
Yeah. But I thought, “Oh my gosh. We have that much power.” And when I was talking to Myles I was saying, “I realize how absolutely vulnerable the Spirit is to us and how He’s just so deeply tender and…

Martha:
He’s gentle.

John:
…and gentle.

Martha:
And to quench the Spirit is to come at Him not in His nature.

John:
And you have to realize how tender He is and how gentle He is and deeply passionate. But He’s easily quenched, He’s easily hurt because He’s so vulnerable and He’s so looking for a ready receptive heart to engage with.

Martha:
I’m thinking…I guess this is ok, Lord. I was speaking in Alabama to a large group of women and I had a specific message. I went to deliver it and the Lord said, “You will not tell them. You will not give this message.” So, I said to the leader, “I’m so sorry the Lord’s not going to allow me.” He was really telling me why.

John:
He had a treasure and He wasn’t going to put it out for somebody that wasn’t going to receive it.

Martha:
They weren’t receptive or something.

But I couldn’t speak. And the leader got real angry with me. And I said, “I’m sorry. I can’t speak unless He says I can.” So, about thirty minutes later the Lord said, “Ok, now.” Now you can speak.” So, I went to her and said, “I can deliver the message now if you want me to.” She said, “God doesn’t change His mind!” I went, “I think so. He just did.”

John:
Good luck. Come on.

Martha:
So, finally she agreed and then I gave the message. That made me look weird, too.

John:
As a body I want to do this because I need Him, we need Him. We need the Spirit’s input and we need the Spirit’s plan and purpose and presence.

Martha:
For several weeks now I wanted to add a meeting for us, maybe Wednesday night, that we could meet to practice this prayer and this waiting and to be together in prayer. We all pray but we aren’t all together as one in prayer. I would love to watch that and be there for that. Ask Him to come and make Himself known.

John:
With our presence and with our passion and with our anticipation and meet His for us.

Martha:
That’s why we love the Passion Bible. Everybody that has one loves it because he’s willing to interpret the passion that’s in the Greek and Hebrew. It’s not in most conservative translations that we get the whole picture of His absolute passion.

John:
Right.

Y’all heard the message and you just heard what I said. I would love to have y’all say something; talk about how you see that or how that affects you or what you would like to see.

Ladonna:
John, when you were talking about boxes, checking these boxes off because I’m a big box person, I thought how it would feel if my husband felt like “I’ve got to check this box off and make sure I’ve done this for her. Let me check this box off and make sure I’ve done that for her.” And it was sad. If my heart would feel like that because somebody just wanted to check off a box to make sure that they had done all they were supposed to do to be right or fulfill their duty that there isn’t any heart or love or relationship in that. That’s how I was feeling about the box. Like I said, I love my boxes. I hope this will be the beginning of me not loving my boxes.

  1. Helen Whaley says:

“God is no respecter of persons”…the Holy Spirit will stretch…us, into mystery, wonder & glory. He moves outside of the familiar, the stopping places of men. The whole Word of God in experiential meaning, Christ Lived, in the context of the last days. Heaven & earth touching. The level of trust in God must reach the Throne of His purpose. Promise coming to completion. The book of Acts is crisis that brought Reality. The Holy Spirit is the determining factor. Not only crisis that surrounds, but the crisis brought out in our personal lives. He is the only & absolute Assurance. Where will we sing? Who do we love? Who has our worship? (abandoned to fear? never!) Entrusted, into our Father’s Love…to Love. God has taken our faces in His Hands, to say, “be true”. We lay our ‘riches’ aside…whatever is…kept…in those ‘boxes’ we check. Love enfolds & permeates the one whose heart lays down to Rest inside His Heart. We Live inside His Love for the Father..this is where the “greater works” are. Rest, in waiting, is, complete expectation, anticipation, fascination, participation…celebration! Holy Spirit, we welcome You…come as You please.
